Kellogg's Honey Smacks Cereal Recalled After Salmonella Outbreak

A Salmonella outbreak has left 73 people ill across 31 states and resulted in 24 people being taken to the hospital. The Centers for Disease Control has linked the outbreak to Kellogg's Honey Smacks. Kellogg announced that is voluntarily recalling all 15.3 oz. and 23 oz. packages of the popular cereal.

The cereal maker issued a statement announcing the recall, saying they immediately "launched an investigation with the third-party manufacturer who produces Honey Smacks," and asking that "people who purchased potentially affected product discard it."

Kellogg is asking that people who purchased potentially affected product discard it and contact the company for a full refund. Consumers seeking more information, including images of these products, can visit kelloggs.com/honeysmacksrecall or call 1-800-962-1413 from Monday – Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET as well as Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. ET.

Symptoms of Salmonella include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. The infection lasts between four and seven days. Most people can recover without treatment, but it can sometimes result in serious or fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
