Faith No More - Ashes to Ashes

Listen, I wrote a blog last week about Mike Patton of Faith No More having an axe to grind while they were on tour with Guns N’ Roses and it put me on a kick. If you missed that article, it’s here and involves Patton getting even with Axl Rose using his bodily fluids as his main weapon. If you don’t have the stomach for that, just know that if Mike Patton is around and there’s a chocolate cake, it’s not a chocolate cake.

From their 1997 release Album of the Year, the band wrote “Ashes to Ashes” while Patton was overseas, but somehow it still clicked. Billy Gould told Keyboard Magazine, “The bulk of that song was written the first week. We arranged it here, and then we sent Patton a tape. He was in Italy, but he came up with the lyrics and the singing right away. It was one of those songs that just clicked -- one of those songs that we do most naturally. That's our sound.”

The video was directed by the late Tim Royes and embraced the dark, somewhat romantic era of Faith No More. The rest of Album of the Year was not looked upon so favorably by the critics. Mike might have had a cake to bake them.
