Yungblud Explains The Meaning Behind '11 Minutes'

Last month, Yungblud teamed up with Halsey and Travis Barker to create the ultimate emo anthem, "11 Minutes," and though the lyrics make it clear the song is about a lost love, the video shows the even darker side of the story: this couple has no chance to reconcile because the girl's been in a fatal car accident.

“It tells the story of [a couple] breaking up because of the way modern society teaches us that being successful or powerful is kind of more important than loving someone else,” the UK-based alt-rocker explains during an episode of "Verified." As time goes on, they realize they need to be together, and while he's sitting at a cafe waiting to meet her, she dies.

Though the lyrics don't overtly reference the accident, the 20-year-old thought of easter eggs to include while he was writing. “‘I think I missed your call, I'm on the other line,’ I see that as a parallel universe like ‘I flatlined’ or ‘I’m moving towards the other side,’” he says before pointing out that the bridge is the girl talking from the other side. “She’s almost watching him at the cafe waiting for her, and she can’t do anything about it.”

He also confesses that he drew inspiration from The Notebook, as any good (or tragic) love song should. “It’s dark, but with this song I want to make people feel things through my words,” he says.

In addition to the collaboration, Yungblud and Halsey also proved they are true emo kids by performing a bone-chilling cover of Death Cab For Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into The Dark." Yungblud will be touring North America this summer, and we can only hope he incorporates both those heart wrenching songs in his setlist.
